Rituals for Fall

Welcoming the Fall Season

The Dahlias are in full bloom, the nights are getting colder, the leaves are just beginning to change and there are still some monarch butterflies flying around . There are still flowers with nectar to sip on after all! You can still feel Summer, but the light is changing into that low, shadowy, gleaming Fall light.

Fall Equinox

The Fall Equinox is a moment of balance between day and night, when it is light for as much time as it is dark in the day. You can feel this symmetry.

Slowing Down

And then in a matter of hours, there is a shift and your body can sense the shorter days. In a time where there is more darkness, there is more space for your soul to expand. The days are less bursting at the seams and filled up to the brim with light, with people, with life. There is time for deep breaths and slowing down.

Fall Rituals

1. Warm Beverages

Allow yourself to sit and savor a hot beverage. No phone in hand, just your warm hands on a mug and your thoughts. My favorite warm drinks right now are:

  • Coffee made with our glass aeropress and steamed whole milk. option: add a sprinkle of cinnamon and/or dark chocolate powder
  • Earl Grey steeped with a 1/4 tsp of vanilla extract and steamed whole milk
  • Matcha whisked with whole steamed milk
  • Chamomile with 1/2 tsp of honey and warm steamed milk
  • English or Irish Breakfast tea steeped with 1 tsp of grated ginger, add whole steamed milk

2. Cooking Large Soups

  • Chicken soup, serve with crusty bread and butter
  • Rainbow Chili, serve with protein rich cornbread
  • Pork Ramen with nourishing kombu broth
  • Kabocha Squash soup with beef stock
  • Potato Leek Soup with Bacon

3. Read a Fall Themed Book (kids books)

  • Hardscrabble Harvest by Dahlov Ipcar
  • The Penderwicks on Gardam Street by Jeanne Birds all (chapter book)
  • Woody, Hazel and Little Pip by Elsa Beskow
  • The Turnip by Jan Brett

4. Do a Fall Craft

  • Beeswax Leaf Garland - Dip leaves in beeswax and string into Garland with twine
  • Roll beeswax candles
  • Bake an apple pie

5. Go on a Fall excursion

  • Go on a hay ride at a farm
  • Pick pumpkins at a pumpkin patch
  • Go on a hike on a nature trail
  • Gather treasures - acorns, fallen leaves, rocks and shells

6. Cook Seasonal Dishes

  • Cook oatmeal with cinnamon and chopped up apples
  • Bake Raspberry Peach Pie with Maple whipped cream
  • Cook pureed Squash soup and eat with bread and butter

7. Make Plans with Friends

  • Go on a hike
  • Have a Family Fall potluck
  • Girls Night out
  • Weekly exercise plan with a friend (walk, swim, hike, a class)

8. Allow yourself some time alone

  • Light a candle and do something you love
  • Listen to a guided meditation
  • Take a bath (add Epsom salts or essential oils)
  • Go on a walk or run in nature
  • Carve out time to do literally any activity at your own pace. This is important, because it can be very hard to commit to. But once you do, it can be transformational! Do any activity that you love to do, at your own pace. It will likely unlock a feeling of calm, abundance and creativity that you were missing.

I hope you can find some peace in your days, you deserve it.

Love,

Momo
