Why Beeswax?

The magic of beeswax

It is no mistake that we opted for 100% raw beeswax for all of our candles. And I can assure you that it wasn’t for its ease of use, sourcing or affordability. The reason we love beeswax so much is for how radically natural it is, for its simplicity, beauty and magic. There is a magical quality to beeswax because it is nature. Most waxes require chemicals and advanced machinery to turn the plant or whatever the substance may be, into wax. But beeswax is not this way. Bees literally make the wax themselves. This magical material can only be made by nature itself.

The color of beeswax

Have you ever wondered why beeswax is a golden yellow and smells sweet like flowers and honey? It’s because bees bring honey and pollen from flowers into the hive and infuse the color of those things into the wax through contact. This is why the color of the beeswax changes over the course of a season or in different locations - because the bees are pollinating different kinds of flowers from different plants - which brings different hues of pollen into the hive.

The sustainability of beeswax

To us it is important to source the highest quality ingredients that are completely natural, healthy for you, and gentle on the planet. Our raw beeswax is a renewable resource, minimally processed (simply filtered to remove debris from the hive), and a byproduct of farm pollination and honey production. Beeswax candles are the best, and you deserve the best!

The benefits of beeswax in candles

If you’ve ever seen other kinds of candles burning next to a beeswax candle, it sheds a completely different light. For example, paraffin and soy shed a white light. Beeswax candles shed a golden glow of light that is warm, inviting and uplifting. Not only that, the candles are like a portal to the natural world - infusing a room with a perfectly sweet, floral, grounding scent of beeswax. Its more ethereal qualities are just as important as some of the brass tacks health benefits of beeswax. It has a clean burn and is non-toxic, free from artificial fragrances, biodegradable, sustainably sourced and is notorious for having long burn times.

Momo’s Place Sourcing of beeswax

We source our raw beeswax from a New England apiary, whose origins harken back almost 70 years in rural Massachusetts, as a small family business interested in honey and pollination. To this day producing unrefined honey with the highest pollen and enzyme content possible is its priority. And as a byproduct of this level of quality and integrity, they produce the finest, raw, filtered beeswax - straight from their healthy hives. This apiary began as a pollination service for New England apple orchards, blueberry and cranberry fields. Today, they transport their hives nation wide - pollinating crops all over the US - and make raw honey filled with the best vitamins, minerals, pollen and enzymes. Choosing beeswax is also choosing to support healthy habitats for bees and the proliferation of our rich and robust ecosystem of wildflowers, plants and animals!

The history of beeswax

The use of beeswax and beeswax candles have been around for millennia. Candlemaking is an age old craft that has provided necessary light, using ingredients from nature and skills passed down through the generations. Beeswax candles have stood the test of time, which is why they were used thousands of years ago in the same way they are used today. Candles continue to reconnect us with an earlier, slower rhythm to the day and the primal parts of us! The parts of us that want to connect with others and with ourselves - Lighting candles at the dinner table or during a ritual. We love beeswax!
